Lessons About Love I Learned From My Parents

April 21, 2017

Something fun about my parents is that they actually eloped! My parents celebrated their thirty-second wedding anniversary this week, so I went up north to watch my little brother while they got away to celebrate their anniversary! It's so crazy to think how their decision to share 'I dos' on that spring day was just the beginning of their legacy in the making. And here are, a house, five kids, many weekend camping trips, good times and bad, their love story is still unfolding thirty two years later. It's so fun to be a part of see for myself!

We learn a lot from our parents, as their influence in our lives shapes so much of how we see things. I for one know I have learned a lot from my parents. How to be kind, to work hard, and to love well. I'm so grateful to have role models of love that have stuck through thick and thin, highs and lows. My parents' marriage has taught me a lot about what it means to love someone, and what that love actually looks like.

Marriage Has Seasons. Sometimes winter lasts too long. Sometimes when it rains, it pours. But eventually the sun does shines. I've seen my parents endure a lot of unexpected together. It was frustrating, and hard, but they did it. And when it was over they thanked God for the light at the end of the tunnel.

It's Not Cookie Cutter. Every marriage looks different. There's no formula to follow to make it look a certain way to guarantee a happy and healthy marriage. Every person is different and every marriage will look different. I saw my parents work through their marriage, letting it be theirs and not a comparison of anyone else's.

Everyday Is A Choice. We don’t know the joy we’ll share or the hurt we’ll feel. But what we do know is that in them we have a choice. And marriage is made up of everyday choices to choose love and to choose marriage. We’ll make good ones, and sometimes we’ll make bad ones. It’s imperfect, but we keep choosing to be better. To love better.

Happy Anniversary mom and dad!
