29, You're Looking Fine!

June 18, 2019

I’m known to be the one who asks the questions during dinner that make people think a little harder. To go a little deeper and reflect, evaluate, or discover. This is especially true when it’s someone's birthday. I always ask the birthday queen/king three things:

  1. What are some things you really loved in the last year?

  2. What was really hard?

  3. What are you most looking forward to?

So since it’s my birthday today, I suppose it’s my turn to answer the questions.

What I Loved Most

  • Savored my solitude. Being alone, to just be. Pause. Reflect. Is a daily must and an essential part of my rhythm. Prioritizing and protecting this time has been so good.

  • More time outside. Time outside fills me up, and I’ve learned how valuable it is to prioritize that time daily. From hiking, camping, caring for our garden, meals on the balcony, or an evening walk time was well spent outdoors. I’ve created a bit of an oasis on our balcony, and I love spending time out there.

  • Performances. I love seeing concerts and plays! My favorites I saw this last year was Mumford & Sons, Taylor Swift, and the Lion King. All were such AMAZING shows!! I can’t wait for more.

  • Practiced more presence. I disconnected, unplugged. Left the phone behind. Had nothing to post to prove I did it. You get the idea. Was more intentional to spend time with people and not my phone.

  • Took up a new hobby. I learned how to embroider this winter and I had so much fun doing it! I’m keeping this my winter hobby, helps to handle the cold-dreary days inside with something I look forward to doing. But I had a blast creating really fun pieces and dare I say I can’t wait for winter to come?!

  • Joy-filled friendships. Old friends and new friends. So many cherished moments, meaningful conversations, and belly-aching laughter. So grateful for many people.

What Was Really Hard

  • The wonderful church family I belong to lost a very special man last summer. It was a hard time. And it made me give grief and death a good look in the eye. Life is limited. It’s short. Singing together in the nursing home celebrating his life, in the last few days of his, will be a hard-cherished moment for me.

What I’m Most Looking Forward To

  • Continuing to stretch my creativity. I have always struggled with calling myself ‘creative’. Like what does that even mean? Discovering my creativity, and all the ways it expresses itself, is a journey that I’m learning how to better lean into with joy and confidence. Creating, whatever form it takes, brings joy, peace, and feelings that words really can’t describe. It’s supposed to be fun, but I often overcomplicate its magic with comparison and perfection. I’m excited to see what I create this next year.

  • Reading 52 books.  I love to read. I love to get lost in a foreign world, I love to be inspired by people and their journeys. I love to learn and to laugh. I read every day and am halfway to my goal! Any suggestions on what I should read next?

  • More adventures. I’ve got some travel plans in the works and I. Am. Stoked. Kicking off the new age backpacking with Karl and then I’m off to Tennessee to visit my sister. I can’t wait for where 29 will take me.
